UK Embassy Lisbon opens Ambassador for a Day 2026
Applications open on 9 December 2025 for Ambassador for a Day 2026 at the British Embassy in Lisbon. If you’ve ever wondered what an Ambassador actually does, this is your chance to find out first-hand and see diplomacy in action.
If selected, you’ll spend 13 March 2026 shadowing the UK Ambassador to Portugal. You’ll sit in on meetings, join conversations linked to International Women’s Day, and get a behind-the-scenes view of how an embassy plans and delivers a busy day.
You can apply if, on 13 March 2026, you are a female student in a secondary school in Portugal, enrolled in Years 10–12, and able to take part in a full day of activities at the Embassy in Lisbon.
To enter, complete the official online form linked from the GOV.UK announcement. You’ll respond to two prompts: why you should be Ambassador for a Day, and which British or Portuguese woman inspires you and how her example motivates you to make a difference. You may submit your answers in writing or as a video.
Remember that the 2026 theme is Women Who Inspire. Creativity matters in the judging, and entries will be reviewed by a diverse jury to support a fair and inclusive process. Do read the Terms and Conditions before you apply, and use afadlisbon@fcdo.gov.uk for questions by 12 January 2026.
Key dates to plan for: applications open on 9 December 2025; the deadline for entries is 12 January 2026; the winner will be contacted between 2 and 13 February 2026; the winner will be announced online on 8 March 2026; the shadowing day takes place on 13 March 2026.
What this looks like in practice: Ambassadors represent the UK, lead their embassy team, build relationships with the host country, support British nationals, and strengthen cultural and economic links. Shadowing gives you a clear view of how public service, communication and teamwork work together in real time.
A bit of context for class: in 2026, the UK and Portugal mark 640 years since the Treaty of Windsor was signed in 1386, often cited as the world’s oldest alliance. Figures such as Philippa of Lancaster show how women have shaped this shared history-use that spirit as you choose the woman who inspires you.
Student tips for a strong submission: choose a British or Portuguese woman whose impact you can explain clearly; link her example to what you’ve done or hope to do in your school or community; if you make a video, plan your structure and check audio and lighting; if you write, keep your answer focused and well organised.
Teacher note: turn this into a short research-and-presentation task in Citizenship, History or English. Introduce the UK–Portugal alliance and International Women’s Day, give time for drafting entries, encourage eligible pupils to apply, and signpost the GOV.UK page for the form and Terms and Conditions.
