Cornwall maerl beds reveal seaweed new to science

A seaweed only a few millimetres across has helped tell one of the most striking nature stories on the Cornish coast. Natural England says underwater surveys of maerl beds off the south coast of Cornwall uncovered rare seaweeds, species never before recorded in the UK, and one tiny red seaweed now confirmed as new to science. That matters for more than curiosity. Even in waters people might assume are already well studied, there are still living things waiting to be properly recognised. Because it was collected alive, scientists could grow it in the lab and sequence its DNA, which finally made firm identification possible. This is where taxonomy comes in. Taxonomy is the part of science that sorts, compares and names living things. That might sound technical, but it shapes everything from conservation law to species monitoring. The survey did not stop with one microscopic surprise. Natural England also recorded Ulva rigida, a green sea lettuce never previously confirmed in the UK. Researchers found Neofolia rosea, sometimes called little rosy tongue weed, which had only been found once before in the UK and at this same site. They also recorded Bonnemaisonia clavata, a delicate red seaweed last seen in British waters in the 18th century. There is an important difference between these findings, and it is worth noticing. Some species are newly confirmed in the UK, which means the evidence now meets the standard needed for the scientific record. Another species was last seen centuries ago, which tells us it was known once and then disappeared from view. These are different kinds of rarity, but both remind us that absence from the record does not always mean absence from the sea.

Another part of the story deserves just as much attention as the species names. According to Natural England, the first signs came from citizen scientist divers involved in the Seasearch project. Their observations helped direct the 2023 and 2024 survey work that later revealed extensive areas of previously unknown maerl beds off England's south coast. That is a strong example of how citizen science works when it is done well. Volunteers do not replace specialist researchers, but they can notice patterns, collect observations and widen the search. Experts then test, verify and interpret what has been found.
